Abstract
This study investigates occupational exposure to perchloroethylene (PERC), a probable carcinogen used in dry cleaning, among workers in Bogotá, Colombia, where its use remains common despite global shifts toward alternatives. A cross-sectional analysis of nine workers across three legally registered dry cleaning facilities found that dry cleaning operators experienced the highest PERC exposure levels (0.72 to 7.22 ppm), all below the adjusted threshold limit value of 19.58 ppm, with blood concentrations below detection limits. Biomarkers for liver damage—gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT)—showed no significant differences between exposed and control groups, although two operators with long-term exposure exhibited elevated GGT levels. The study highlights the need for improved preventive measures, including better ventilation and personal protective equipment, and calls for further research with larger samples to better assess exposure risks in this sector.
