Abstract

Graph In I Design and Modernity in Asia: National Identity and Transnational Exchange 1945-1990 i , editors Yunah Lee and Megha Rajguru have curated a provocative collection of 12 case studies of design in modern Asian contexts. Suga informs us that the Japanese middle class preferred the "three sacred treasures" (a washing machine, refrigerator, and vacuum cleaner) to Kenmochi's furniture. Sadly, Kenmochi found that not only did an international audience respond unfavorably to his modern domestic furniture, but in Japan at this time, 'the average people were not living in the world Kenmochi envisaged.
