Abstract
This article investigates the association between gender affirmation and interest in adoption among transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse adults using data from the 2023 Washington Priority Assessment in Trans Health Project. Findings indicate that 56% of the 788 participants expressed interest in adoption, with legal gender affirmation—specifically updating legal name documents—and access to private health insurance strongly associated with this interest. Additionally, socioeconomic stability factors such as food security and homeownership, as well as discussions about fertility options with healthcare providers, were linked to greater adoption interest. The study highlights the importance of comprehensive, trans-inclusive family-planning services that address legal recognition, healthcare access, economic barriers, and psychological support to facilitate adoption pathways for transgender and gender-diverse individuals.
