Abstract
The article focuses on the preservation challenges and cultural significance of Pioneer Cemetery in Carson City, Nevada, the oldest cemetery in the area containing graves of Nevada's first pioneers. It highlights the loss of grave markers due to natural decay and vandalism, which threatens the historical, cultural, and artistic information these markers convey. The cemetery, partly obscured by local development and vegetation, contains many unmarked graves, limiting knowledge about those interred. Grave markers serve as important artifacts reflecting community values and identities, and documenting existing markers is crucial to preserving this heritage. Despite deterioration, efforts to recognize lost individuals and maintain the cemetery as an outdoor collection of heritage continue to be important for safeguarding local history.
