Design modifications of agricultural hand tools based on anthropometric study for the farm workers of Uttarakhand, India.

Abstract

This article focuses on the ergonomic assessment and design modification of traditional agricultural hand tools used by male hill farmers in Uttarakhand, India. Anthropometric data from 200 male agricultural workers were collected and analyzed to propose optimized handle dimensions for commonly used tools such as the khurpi, fork, and sickle. The study found that the hand grip strength of hill farmers is lower than the national average, and recommended handle diameters of 32 to 34.1 mm with a length of approximately 115.6 mm to improve comfort, safety, and efficiency. The proposed tool dimensions differ from existing local designs, suggesting that ergonomic redesign could reduce fatigue and enhance usability for hill farmers.
