Abstract

The article focuses on the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) reported consideration of employing bounty hunters to assist in locating individuals targeted for deportation. Documents obtained by The Intercept reveal DHS’s interest in contracting private bounty hunters to verify the whereabouts of people sought by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), raising legal and ethical concerns about due process and transparency. Critics highlight the problematic nature of bounty hunters, who are privately contracted, lightly regulated, and have a history of abuses, while DHS’s increased funding and aggressive immigration enforcement amplify worries about oversight and accountability. The proposal, if implemented, would represent a significant expansion of government enforcement tactics amid ongoing debates about immigration policy and civil rights.
