Abstract
This article examines the accuracy of self-declared medical histories compared to General Practitioner (GP) records for bus drivers undergoing medical assessments for UK Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) Group 2 licenses, which cover large vehicles such as buses. Reviewing 145 medical assessments over a 12-month period, the study found that 8.3% of drivers had undeclared medical conditions in their GP records that could affect fitness to drive, none of which had been reported to the DVLA. The findings highlight a discrepancy between self-reporting and medical records, raising concerns about the DVLA’s reliance on driver self-declaration and the limited awareness among doctors of DVLA fitness-to-drive guidelines. The article suggests reconsideration of current policies to include more robust verification of medical information to enhance public safety.
