String Teachers' Perspectives of Nontraditional Music Courses and Ensembles in Public Schools.

Abstract

This study examines middle and high school string teachers' beliefs and practices regarding nontraditional music courses and ensembles (NMCEs), defined as music classes outside of AP Music Theory, orchestra, band, or choir. Surveying 42 secondary string teachers, the research found that guitar, pit orchestra, and music technology were the most commonly offered NMCEs, while teachers expressed strong interest in adding fiddle club, popular music, and mariachi ensembles. Participants emphasized that NMCEs provide culturally relevant opportunities, foster musical skills such as improvisation and playing by ear, and engage a broader, more diverse student population, including those without prior experience. The study highlights barriers to offering NMCEs, such as limited preparation time and resources, and suggests that music teacher education programs should better prepare educators to teach these courses to enhance inclusivity and creativity in school music programs.
