Colorism Among Black Women: A Review of Psychological Research From 2000 to 2023.

Colorism is a form of discrimination targeting people with a darker skin tone. Like, racism and sexism, colorism is prevalent and negatively affects Black women but remains understudied. To direct future research on this topic, we completed a semi‐systematic review of empirical studies on colorism among Black women. Articles included for review met the following criteria: (a) published between 2000 and 2023, (b) analyzed empirical data, (c) psychologically focused on Black women's experiences with colorism, and (d) were composed of Black women participants. Qualifying sources (N = 53) were categorized into one of eight topic areas. We also analyzed sample characteristics, research methods, and publication trends across all the articles included in the review. Based upon our review, we highlight the strengths and limitations of the current scholarship focused on Black women's experiences with colorism and offer suggestions for future research.
