Abstract
This article examines the relationship between different types of processing speed—specifically psychomotor versus cognitive—and episodic verbal memory. In a study of 231 adults, measures of psychomotor processing speed, assessed by the Weschler Adult Intelligence Scale-Fourth Edition Coding (WAIS-CD) and Trail Making Test-A (TMT-A), were found to be significant independent predictors of episodic verbal memory performance, even after controlling for premorbid intelligence and motor functioning. The findings suggest a nuanced link between psychomotor processing speed and episodic memory, highlighting the need for future research to control for additional physical factors to better understand this relationship.
