Abstract
This article focuses on research conducted in Zurich, Switzerland, examining how the dimensions, positioning, and biomechanical parameters of violas influence muscular effort and perceived exertion in players, with implications for preventing Playing-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (PRMDs). The study involved 31 violists performing standardized tests with different viola sizes and positions, measuring muscle activation via electromyography (EMG) and subjective effort using the BORG scale. Findings indicate that instrument positioning significantly affects muscle activation and perceived effort, and longer arm lengths correlate with reduced muscular strain. The research suggests that individualized ergonomic adjustments could improve playing posture and health outcomes for violists, with further studies needed to assess effects during extended playing durations.
