Abstract

This systematic review examines the prevalence and factors associated with depression among Filipino nurses, a group facing both a national nursing shortage and challenging socioeconomic conditions. Across three studies involving 1,170 nurses, self-reported depressive symptoms ranged from 19.5% to 45%, with higher rates observed among nurses intending to migrate. Depression was positively linked to occupational burnout factors such as disengagement and exhaustion, while personal faith, spiritual contentment, and religious practice were negatively associated with depression. The review highlights the need for community- and hospital-based mental wellness programs that incorporate motivational, engagement, and spiritual components, and calls for future longitudinal research with broader sampling to better understand and address depression in this population.
