Abstract

The article focuses on the Filipino American Ministry Initiative (FAMI) at Fuller Theological Seminary, the first seminary-based program dedicated to Filipino American Christian ministry and identity. FAMI integrates Filipino American psychology—particularly addressing colonial mentality (CM), a form of internalized oppression—with theology to support healing and leadership development among Filipino American Christian ministers and ministry leaders. Through 8- to 10-week formation groups, FAMI combines historical, psychological, and theological education with storytelling and community building to foster awareness of Filipino American history, identity, and faith in a postcolonial context. Participant feedback highlights the program's strengths in creating community and addressing CM, while also noting challenges related to diverse theological backgrounds and the need to broaden accessibility beyond its current demographic of mostly first- and second-generation, educated Filipino American Christians.
