Abstract
The article examines the complex history and legacy of the Habsburg Empire, highlighting its survival and eventual collapse in 1918. It discusses how the Empire, despite being seen by some historians as an outdated dynastic state, maintained relative stability and prosperity through effective governance, cultural diversity, and shared identity among its multiethnic populations. The Habsburg monarchy played a significant geopolitical and cultural role in Central Europe, serving as both a protector of smaller ethnic groups and a center of vibrant cultural exchange. While nationalism and war ultimately led to its dissolution, the Empire’s influence persists in the region’s legal frameworks, architecture, and cultural traditions, shaping ongoing debates about identity and diversity in successor states.
