Abstract

The article focuses on the discovery of rare drawings of wampum belts from a 1712 meeting between the Delaware (Lenape) chief Sassoonan and colonial officials in Pennsylvania. The drawings, which depict thirty-four wampum belts, are preserved in the minutes of the Pennsylvania Provincial Council and represent a unique resource for scholars studying Indigenous history. Although the text of the council minutes has been known since 1838, the drawings were only recently uncovered in 2015 by a curatorial fellow, leading to their digitization and inclusion in an exhibition. This newfound access allows for deeper research into the significance of wampum in Indigenous governance and diplomacy. [Extracted from the article]
