Abstract

The article explores the sexuality of the moon goddess Cynthia in Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher's play "The Maid's Tragedy" and argues on the implications of her falling in love with the mortal man Latmos. It characterizes Cynthia as a virgin goddess and suggests a nostalgic allusion to Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen and the extrication of the goddess from the Ottoman Empire. It discusses the play's partial justification of tyrannicide and establishment of the feminine ideal.
