Abstract

The article explores economist Adam Smith's ideas on how the feudal lords of Europe lost their independence by bartering their power and authority with luxuries, based on his books "Lectures of Jurisprudence" and "The Wealth of Nations." Topics discussed include the lord-vassal relationship, the king's jurisdictions and authorities and the diamond-buckle dynamic as a baron's means to signal his wealth and worth, screen for vain and pliant alliance and a cultural strategy to engineer submission.
