Abstract

This study investigates how technical performance indicators influence match outcomes at different stages of the Chinese Super League (CSL) season from 2010 to 2019. Using data from 4,776 matches divided into early (rounds 1–10), middle (11–20), and late (21–30) stages, a two-way fixed-effect ordered logit model revealed that as the season progresses, an increase in shots on goal increasingly contributes to better match results, while an increase in red cards more strongly correlates with worse outcomes. Offensive indicators were more influential in the early stage, whereas both offensive and defensive indicators, including red and yellow cards, significantly affected outcomes in the middle and late stages. The findings suggest that coaching strategies should emphasize offensive coordination early in the season and psychological and disciplinary management later to optimize team performance.
