Abstract
This study analyzed factors influencing mental health services use among 8,877 older Americans, including immigrants, based on data from the 2021 National Health Interview Survey. Findings indicated that older adults with depression or anxiety, those who were Hispanic or other non-Black/Asian minorities, relatively educated, widowed/separated/divorced or unmarried, and Medicaid recipients were more likely to use mental health services, while increasing age and being foreign-born reduced such likelihood. No significant associations were found with gender, Black or Asian race, U.S. citizenship, employment, private insurance, Medicare, English proficiency, or psychological distress. The study suggests expanding Medicaid eligibility, increasing support for immigrant community centers, and providing cultural competency training for mental health providers to better address the needs of aging adults and diverse cultural beliefs about mental health.
