Abstract

The article focuses on French mandolinist Julien Martineau's recording "Mandolin Concertos & Songs," which showcases the mandolin in diverse musical settings. Highlights include a spirited performance of Vivaldi's Concerto in G for two mandolins with Anna Schivazappa, the world premiere recording of Raffaele Calace's Concerto for Mandolin and Piano in E minor, Op. 113, orchestrated by Thibault Perrine, and four duos for mandolin and guitar by Paganini performed with guitarist Eric Franceries. The recording features a balance of solo and ensemble passages, expressive playing, and well-crafted liner notes that provide context for the repertoire. This album offers a varied and technically accomplished exploration of the mandolin's capabilities.
