Abstract
This review essay examines two edited volumes—*The Prisons Memory Archive. A Case Study in Filmed Memory of Conflict* (2022) and *Archives and Human Rights* (2021)—focusing on their contributions to understanding the relationship between archival practice, human rights, and transitional justice. *The Prisons Memory Archive* explores participatory, inclusive archival methods through the case of audiovisual records related to Northern Ireland's conflict, emphasizing co-ownership, ethical engagement, and the political complexities of memory work. *Archives and Human Rights*, produced by the International Council on Archives, offers a broad overview of state archives' roles in transitional justice across diverse global contexts, highlighting tensions between legal frameworks, archival access, and political interests. Both volumes illustrate the intricate interplay between archival practices and political dynamics at domestic, transitional, and international levels, underscoring that archives of contested pasts require not only technical expertise but also political will, with implications for future research on archives and justice.
