Abstract
The article focuses on integrating mentorship into organizational culture to enhance employee development and business performance. It highlights the experience of Maria Tsierkezos at BT Group, whose career progression was significantly aided by mentoring that addressed mindset and leadership behaviors beyond technical skills. Despite widespread availability of mentoring programs in companies, actual participation remains low, often limited to high-potential employees, which overlooks broader organizational benefits such as improved job performance, engagement, and retention. To foster a mentoring culture, the article recommends broadening access through an opt-out approach, embedding mentoring into performance conversations, measuring outcomes, and encouraging senior leaders to mentor beyond their direct teams. Organizations that democratize mentoring reportedly achieve faster employee development, stronger collaboration, and a more resilient leadership pipeline.
