Abstract

Anne Schenderlein's book, "Germany on Their Minds: German Jewish Refugees in the United States and Their Relationships with Germany, 1938–1988," explores the experiences of German Jewish refugees who left Germany in 1938 and their relationship with their former home country until 1988. Schenderlein focuses on the agency of ordinary people and examines the West Coast as a unique angle of analysis. She discusses topics such as Americanization, the Enemy Alien Classification of 1941, and the refugees' involvement in the war effort. Schenderlein also highlights the refugees' interactions with German POWs, their work in identifying Nazis, and their efforts in advocating for restitution. The book emphasizes the diverse perspectives and experiences of German Jewish refugees and challenges traditional classifications of exile. [Extracted from the article]
