Abstract
The article explores the judicial opinions of former U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Samuel Nelson favoring the Seneca Indians. It examines the crises in Seneca County, New York relating to the Treaty at Buffalo Creek and highlights the law practice of Nelson in Leatherstocking Country. It takes a look at the influence of legal scholar James Kent on the judicial career of Nelson and the decision of Nelson in the case The New York Indians regarding the taxation of Indian nations.
