Abstract
Food insecurity is worsening in West and Central Africa, with the number of hungry people expected to reach 49.5 million by mid-2024. Acute hunger in the region is driven by conflict, climate crisis, and high food and fuel prices. Many households cannot afford healthy diets, and young children are not receiving the necessary food groups for optimal growth. Additionally, climate change is putting 45 million children in Sub-Saharan Africa at risk of malnutrition, ill health, displacement, and educational disruptions. The situation is particularly dire in Tigray, Ethiopia, where the government denies the region is on the brink of famine. Niger and Zimbabwe are also facing food security challenges due to drought, crop pests, flooding, and declining soil fertility. In Sudan's Darfur region, about one million children are suffering from malnutrition, with paramilitary forces preventing access to food and health aid. [Extracted from the article]
