Abstract
A recent DNA study has revealed that members of the Blackfoot Confederacy, including the Blackfeet, Kainai, Piikani, and Siksika tribes, have an ancient lineage that dates back 18,000 years. The research team conducted whole-genome sequencing on seven skeletons and six present-day tribal members, finding that the historical Blackfoot ancestors and present-day Blackfeet and Kainai share a significant portion of their genome. This lineage is distinct from other Indigenous groups in North and South America. The study, led by Indigenous community members, aims to secure treaty rights and advance scientific knowledge of Indigenous genomic lineages. [Extracted from the article]
