Abstract

The US government has pledged to support African production of antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) as the continent faces the world's largest HIV epidemic. The US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (Pepfar) program has committed to purchasing ARVs for two million African patients from local suppliers. This move is significant because it will boost production on the continent and address the ongoing HIV/AIDS crisis. The Covid-19 pandemic has also highlighted the need for increased local drug production in Africa, as the continent faced challenges in accessing vaccines and addressing health issues.
