Abstract
The article focuses on the contemporary Native American artists Chris Pappan (Kaw/Osage/Cheyenne River Sioux) and Jesse Littlebird (Laguna/Kewa Pueblo), highlighting their works that connect traditional cultural themes with modern artistic expression. Pappan’s ledger art continues the Plains Indians’ practice of recording history and personal narratives, exemplified by pieces like *National Casket* and *Epilogue*, which references the sacred Kaw Nation boulder Iⁿ‘zhúje‘waxóbe and its rematriation. Littlebird’s paintings, including *Lightning People Dancing in the Valley No. 7* and *Meditations on Fire No. 9 (Vienna Sausage Memory)*, draw on Pueblo pottery patterns, landscape inspiration, and personal family history to explore ancestral connections and cultural memory. Both artists integrate historical and contemporary elements to honor their heritage and reflect on Indigenous identity. [Extracted from the article]
