Abstract
This article focuses on the diary of Edward N. Hussey, a young "jobbing" carpenter in late nineteenth-century New York City, providing a detailed account of his work, life, and the building trades during a period of rapid urban growth. Hussey’s diary from 1890 reveals the nature of carpentry work, including alterations and repairs, the role of unions like the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, and the social and economic conditions of skilled craftsmen in a booming construction market. It also offers insights into Hussey’s personal aspirations, family life, education, and interactions within a diverse urban environment. The diary illustrates how traditional craftsmanship coexisted with industrial expansion and highlights the opportunities and challenges faced by working-class tradesmen in the city’s evolving labor landscape.
