Abstract

This article focuses on the prevalence and associated factors of past 12-month suicidal behaviour (PSB) among adults in Cabo Verde, based on data from the nationally representative 2020 Cabo Verde STEPS survey. The study found that 3.7% of adults reported PSB, including suicidal ideation (3.3%), plans (1.5%), and attempts (0.6%), with higher rates among women and younger individuals. Factors significantly associated with PSB included younger age, female sex, unemployment, being widowed or divorced, family alcohol problems, history of cardiovascular events (heart attack, angina, or stroke), current smokeless tobacco use, and low fruit/vegetable intake. The findings highlight the need for targeted public health interventions addressing these risk factors to prevent suicidal behaviour in Cabo Verde.
