Abstract
The article discusses new research focused on mental health issues within American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities, particularly the Quinault Indian Nation (QIN). The study highlights the need for culturally responsive approaches to enhance protective factors against substance use and mental illness among adolescents and young adults (AYA). Through interviews with QIN community members, the research identified barriers to cultural engagement that hinder AYA participation in activities promoting resilience and mental well-being. The findings suggest that addressing these barriers and fostering community connections are essential for preventing substance use and mental health problems in the future.
