Abstract
An editorial is presented on revisiting the article “What’s Different About Social Media Networks? A Framework and Research Agenda” published in 2014 in MIS Quarterly. First, the authors of the paper reflect on their theoretical framework for online social media networks which categorizes these networks and provides defining characteristics. Then the authors look to several areas that were not in their original work that are significant to this discussion now including surveillance capitalism and decentralized platforms.
