Abstract
The article focuses on Montserrat Roig's novel *The Time of Cherries*, which captures Barcelona during the late Franco dictatorship, just before Spain’s transition to democracy. Originally published in Catalan in 1976 and now available in English, the novel centers on Natàlia, a former student activist navigating family tensions and political repression in a conservative, middle-class Barcelona. Roig’s work vividly portrays the cultural and political atmosphere of the era, including police violence, generational divides, and the impact of historical events such as the execution of anarchist Salvador Puig Antich. The novel is recognized for its frank exploration of themes like sex, death, and aging, and for breaking silences around taboo subjects in post-Franco Catalonia. [Extracted from the article]
