Abstract

The article focuses on the rapid spread of mpox in Sierra Leone, which has become a significant outbreak, accounting for three-quarters of new cases in Africa. The outbreak began with a young man who contracted the virus after engaging with a sex worker, leading to over 3,000 reported cases in the country. Researchers are puzzled by the virus's behavior, as it appears to spread differently in Sierra Leone compared to previous outbreaks linked to the same variant, clade IIb, which was primarily associated with men who have sex with men (MSM). The country's health system is overwhelmed, and there is an urgent need for more vaccines to control the outbreak, as Sierra Leone has received only a fraction of the necessary doses.
