Abstract

Finally, it is a pity that Owensby seems unaware of a pioneering investigation of closely related questions for a wider range of societies by anthropologist A.F. Robertson ( I Greed i , 2001). Owensby's historical-linguistic analysis suggests that the Guaraní Indians had a conception of shirking in the sixteenth century. Like Owensby, Ferguson invokes mutuality, but only at the very end, and quite briefly. Moral economy is the common analytic frame within which Owensby seeks to bridge the worldview of the Indigenous population with the diametrically opposed perspectives of their European conquerors.
