Abstract
The article traces the parallels between African American women's experiences of slavery and their experiences of incarceration at Angola, a former slave plantation, during Jim Crow. It describes the coerced labor and discipline illustrated by the experiences of Rosa H., Stella R. and Sylviana W. It also illustrates how the carceral system blocked the aspirations of African Americans for freedom and the continuities between the penitentiary plantation and Louisiana society at large.
