Abstract

This article critically analyzes Netflix’s 2025 animated musical *KPop Demon Hunters* (KPDH) through a crip reading grounded in critical disability studies (CDS), focusing on how the film’s narrative exemplifies the affirmation model of disability. Although KPDH does not explicitly depict disabled characters, disabled and neurodivergent fans have developed headcanons interpreting the protagonists’ experiences—particularly Rumi’s concealed demon heritage and Zoey and Mira’s neurodivergent traits—as metaphors for disability, masking, and social exclusion. The film subverts traditional cure and tragedy narratives by portraying difference as a source of strength achieved through authentic self-expression and community acceptance, culminating in a collective identity symbolized by the “Rainbow Honmoon.” This analysis highlights how mainstream popular culture can offer affirming disability representations when viewed through disability-informed interpretive strategies, underscoring the transformative potential of fan engagement and inclusive storytelling.
