Abstract
This study investigates factors influencing family members’ decisions regarding the preferred place of death for hospitalized dying older patients in Taiwan. Among 100 family members surveyed, key factors associated with choosing home as the preferred place of death included prior discussions with the patient about their wishes and higher family functioning, with these factors increasing the likelihood of selecting home death by 1.41 and 2.72 times, respectively. Additional influences included patients’ education levels, family income, hiring caregivers, and social support. The findings highlight the importance of facilitating communication about end-of-life preferences and supporting family functioning to help fulfill older patients’ wishes for their place of death.
