Abstract
The article focuses on police volunteerism as an expanding international practice and examines its treatment in current research, particularly within a special issue of Policing. It highlights a less explored perspective that views police volunteerism as a form of social action embedded within broader social institutions and group interactions. The discussion addresses how major social institutions both shape and are influenced by police volunteerism, and considers the implications of police discretionary deviance—specifically corruption and excessive use of force—on the roles of volunteers. The article calls for further research adopting this critical social scientific approach.
