Abstract
DirecTV's CEO, Bill Morrow, has proposed a takeover of rival Dish, signaling the decline of the satellite-TV business. Morrow's plan is to create a one-stop shop for streaming apps and smaller bundles of live TV channels delivered via the internet. This move is a response to the loss of pay-TV subscribers. The deal would make DirecTV the largest pay-TV company in the US. The shift to streaming is driven by financial reasons, as acquiring satellite customers is expensive compared to acquiring streaming customers. Morrow believes that the combination of DirecTV and Dish will give him more negotiating power with TV programmers. The merger also provides an opportunity to work with broadband providers like Starlink to offer TV programming in rural areas. However, DirecTV will still face competition from other streaming services like Amazon Prime and Charter Communications. Morrow promises an improved TV interface and search feature to enhance the customer experience. [Extracted from the article]
