Abstract
This article examines cancer survivors' access to, use of, and disposal practices for prescribed opioids within the context of the opioid epidemic. Through qualitative interviews with 25 predominantly female breast cancer survivors, the study identified three main themes: restrictive prescribing policies and pharmacy barriers limiting opioid access; survivors' decreased opioid use due to fears of addiction and side effects; and inconsistent or inadequate education on safe opioid storage and disposal. Participants reported self-modifying opioid use and safeguarding medications, often without standardized guidance on disposal, which may contribute to unmanaged pain and safety risks. The findings highlight the need for nursing-led education and advocacy to improve opioid management, address patient concerns, and ensure safe handling and disposal practices among cancer survivors.
