Spatial comparison of disappearance and scintillation phenomena using a single-unit scintillating grid illusion.

Abstract
This article investigates the spatial properties of disappearance and scintillation phenomena within the scintillating grid illusion, focusing on where these effects occur in peripheral vision. Using a single-unit scintillating grid illusion, two experiments assessed participants' perception of a white disk (linked to disappearance) and illusory blackness (linked to scintillation) under binocular and monocular viewing. Results showed that both phenomena exhibit spatial anisotropy, with perceptual regions larger in the horizontal than vertical direction, and this anisotropy was present under both binocular and monocular vision. The findings suggest that disappearance and scintillation occur in distinct peripheral regions, providing insight into how these incompatible phenomena coexist in the scintillating grid illusion.
