Abstract
Researchers from DairyNZ, AgResearch, and Fonterra are collaborating to study heat stress in dairy cows in Southland, New Zealand. Rising temperatures in the region have increased the risk of heat stress in cows, which can impact their well-being and milk production. The researchers have developed a Grazing Heat Load Index to assess heat stress in grazing cows, taking into account factors such as temperature, humidity, sunlight, and wind. They have also collected detailed data on cow respiration rates and are exploring the use of technology to monitor rumen temperature. The findings will help farmers better understand and manage heat stress in their herds. [Extracted from the article]
