Abstract

The article focuses on the phenomenon of linguistic genocide in India, examining the historical and ongoing threats to the country's extensive linguistic diversity due to globalization, domestic prejudice, and state policies. It analyzes the legal and constitutional frameworks related to minority and Indigenous languages in India, highlighting challenges in their recognition, preservation, and promotion, and assesses their alignment with international human rights standards. The study discusses how linguistic genocide—defined as the systematic destruction of languages—impacts cultural identity, social cohesion, and human rights, arguing for the need to criminalize and address it alongside physical genocide. It concludes by emphasizing the importance of harmonizing India's language policies with global norms to safeguard linguistic plurality and cultural heritage.
