Abstract

This article focuses on comparing healthcare avoidance behavior among US and Canadian pilots due to fear of losing their aeromedical certification required for active flying status. Analysis of survey data from 3,765 US and 1,405 Canadian pilots found a similarly high prevalence of healthcare avoidance in both populations (56% US, 55% Canadian), with US pilots showing slightly higher adjusted odds of reporting such behavior. Differences were noted in specific avoidance behaviors: Canadian pilots more frequently withheld information during medical screening, while US pilots more often sought informal medical advice. The study highlights healthcare avoidance as an international phenomenon with potential implications for pilot health, aeromedical screening effectiveness, and aviation safety, underscoring the need for further research to understand and mitigate these behaviors.
