Abstract
This article examines how mainstream newspapers in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) framed Venezuelan migrants over a one-year period from July 2022 to July 2023, using framing theory as a lens. The study found that while some media coverage highlighted Venezuelan migrants' integration into T&T society, the predominant portrayal involved othering through labels such as "illegal" or "undocumented," associations with crime, and emphasis on human rights challenges and the State's response. These media frames contribute to the dehumanization and marginalization of Venezuelan migrants, reflecting and potentially reinforcing negative public attitudes within T&T's complex racial and socio-political context. The article concludes with recommendations for more culturally sensitive media practices and legal reforms to improve migrants' rights and integration.
