Abstract
This article examines emerging trends in reported intimate partner and marital (spousal) rape within the broader context of domestic violence in Greece during 2020 and 2021, including the COVID-19 pandemic period. Using official nationwide data from the Hellenic Police, the study found that while reported domestic violence increased significantly in 2021 compared to 2020, the overall rate of reported domestic rape remained stable, with a notable 27.8% rise in reported marital rape cases. Most victims were female, predominantly aged 30 to 45, and reported incidents peaked in August of both years. The study highlights the underreporting and legal, cultural, and social complexities surrounding intimate partner and marital rape in Greece, emphasizing the need for further long-term research to better understand these public health concerns.
