Abstract

The article presents the 2024 UK guidelines for the management of syphilis, including the first UK-specific guidelines for pregnant people and children. Key updates include the licensed use of benzathine penicillin with lidocaine, discontinuation of macrolides due to antimicrobial resistance, and expanded use of PCR testing. The guidelines cover diagnosis, treatment regimens, management of complications such as neurosyphilis, and partner notification, emphasizing holistic sexual healthcare and tailored clinical judgment. They address syphilis epidemiology, clinical features, laboratory testing, and management in people living with HIV, aiming to reduce transmission and complications within specialist and broader healthcare settings.
