Abstract
The article discusses the challenges faced in expanding affordable daycare supply in British Columbia (B.C.), where advocates report that less than three percent of children are receiving $10-a-day child care. Despite government efforts since 2018 to create new licensed spaces, approximately 600,000 children aged 0-12 years are competing for only 160,000 licensed daycare spots, with only 16,000 of those offering the $10 rate. Real estate issues, such as space scarcity and complex funding requirements, hinder the establishment of new daycare facilities, while regulatory standards further complicate the process. The Coalition of Child Care Advocates of B.C. has relaunched its campaign for universal, affordable child care, citing a lack of progress in meeting the government's commitments.
