Abstract
The article focuses on common challenges managers face in effective workplace listening and offers strategies to improve this critical leadership skill. Drawing on a review of 117 studies, it identifies five main pitfalls—haste, defensiveness, invisibility, exhaustion, and inaction—that hinder managers from truly hearing employees, which can damage trust, engagement, and performance. The article recommends deliberate, distraction-free listening, managing emotional reactions, visibly demonstrating attention through body language and verbal cues, setting boundaries to avoid fatigue, and always following up with clear next steps. These practices aim to foster stronger relationships, greater transparency, and meaningful organizational change.
